Awaiting The Storm by kkart Awaiting The Storm by kkart
Awaiting The Storm

Rural Colorado sets the scene for this horse barn I happened upon while out on one of my photography journeys. I really liked this barn, and I certainly have a love affair with catching them in a shot! However what really got me was the entire scene itself! The incoming storm really played a lot with the atmosphere in this, which reminded of the movie "Twister", it certainly has the kind of look and feel to it, at least to me it does. I really am a sucker for this kind of subject matter, I shoot it often but don't post it much, why, I don't know honestly....when in fact I love travel photography that has a nice rural/country feel to it. Hmmm, maybe I should post it more often, we'll see!

Its a very appealing building John and for a dark gloomy day its exposed very well with good foreground light allowing the colours to pop out nicely.I also like the angle you have chosen giving nice reflective light off the grey metal roof.I have a few suggestions with the composition though. The building seems cramped and enclosed. Given that storm is in the title I would have like to have seen you move back and open the shot up a bit more. The weathervane is nearly scraping the top of the shot. The building seems to have two faces or aspects, the windows to the side like eyes and the porch to the right. I would choose either as leadins to the eye looking out on more space if that makes sense. Otherwise its a visually arresting shot that stopped my browsing in its tracks!

As a whole, this piece just works really well visually. The dark slate clouds complement the metal roof of the barn in color. It also enhances the old feeling of the barn wood. I'm not entirely sure what I think about the fence. On the one hand, I would have liked to see an older fence, but on the other hand, the white is so striking against the dark that it really brings focus to the barn. I guess that would just be up to personal preference.

I think the touch of having the barn doors open is really striking. It's like peering into a dark void of the unknown. Being an artist and not a photographer, I don't know anything about the technique used to take this picture, but I do know that the picture just works, and it works well! As a whole, it's an amazing photograph!

Can I ask where in Colorado this is?  We have a cabin in Leadville, about 2 hours north of Denver so I was curious.  Beautiful shot.

I have to agree with the consensus. This is an excellent shot! I love the barn, and the sky coloring, this would be one of those days to sit out on the porch and watch the storm roll in.

I didn't get to reply to this when you first uploaded it but now i am back in the city and first thing i had to do is see this image. Seriously this image has been in my mind the entire week. The atmosphere the clouds create and also the colours are absolutely amazing. Plus the classic barn is beautiful!

May i ask how you got the colours to be so rich? Are you using filters on the lens?

Firstly, yes, you should definitely post more of this kind of stuff, I love it! Secondly, this reminds me of when I used to live in Kansas and the 'big' storms would be rolling in (that's the only thing I miss about Kansas are the storms...) This shot makes me think of the Wizard of Oz. I can hear Dorothy in the back ground yelling "Auntie Em! Auntie Em!" And I don't mean that in a bad way lol. Simply awesome work, John
