I was going to write something and then basically just forget it. Not worth my time.
So hi.
Yours truly is going to be getting interviewed on the upcoming "Shutter Time Show" podcast  [link] where I will discuss my photography and about shooting in general. get ready! Should be fun! When it is available I will link you all.

In other news;

Kind of wondering this...why do groups even exist? Seriously, why? They are still so half baked and are so far away from what they could be. I honestly can't tell you either how many idiots I have encountered who have no idea what a good photo is. Seriously, if you are going to make someone an admin at least make 100% sure that they have a gallery and body of work to backup what they are talking about. You are simply out and shooting pictures that resemble something Stevie Wonder took? You probably have no business being an admin of a group. Just sayin'.  Time to clean out the groups I am a member of and keep the good ones who know wtf they are talking about.

Want to know something else? I'll tell ya.

I am going to break down the door and tell you all a little something here. Something that may stir the pot and if you say "they don't to me", I won't believe you. Each and everyone who has ever said "page views don't matter", "comments don't matter", "favs don't matter" is lying about it. Period. Everybody wants to be seen and people to see their work. Straight up, if you didn't you would be posting it on the internet in the first place would you? No.
Each time you upload an image you are in effect promoting yourself, whether it is to get favs, comments, get a DD, make the front page, your name just out there or maybe sell something. What people hate isn't the self promotion/ego stroking, what they hate is the competition which surrounds it.

True story.
John

I've always seem pageviews, favs and other statistics as a pleasant side-effect of something more meaningful - sharing art. Of course it's nice to see that people are looking at what you've created or visiting your dA page, but it shouldn't be the reason or motivation behind creating. I share my art all over the net and it makes me happy that people see it, just like it makes me happy to see what other people shoot, draw, paint, write or sculpt :aww:

I guess I get that, I do want people to see my work I want to know if I'm doing well or if I need work in some erea's I want more ideas. But I also want my stuff to point to God and give Him glory, I want my life to be glorifying to Him. I think the best way I can do that is by doing my best, and following Him. Hey if you don't mind could you take a look at my gallery and tell me what you think? [link] it's not great or anything but I would like input.

I agree. I do care about the views and faves and shit. But I don't care about the competition. It just makes me blue when I put myself and my work out there because I'm proud of what I did and no one even notices. But hey, such is life, right? lol

And as far as the groups thing goes. I like the premise, but I have most of the submissions blocked off my deviations feed thing because so many of them are not up to standard. But I guess that's me being a hypocrite a bit because maybe those people are proud of what they've accomplished. Just can't win :D

Do you feel (like I do) that groups have completely changed the dA experience - and for the worst? There are now so many of them, that mainly seem to be run by people who couldn't get their work accepted in the more picky groups, just so that they can have somewhere safe to show off their work, and also so that they in turn can appear to know what they're talking about or what they're doing even, by turning other works away... It seems to have almost become a revenge thing to me. And no-one seems to watch the group deviations any more, yet at the same time I get the impression they aren't even watching individuals any more either. So what we're left with is a huuuuge groups contest going on, all competing with one another with nothing special to advertise about themselves, and one hell of a lot of very nasty bitching from people who insist they are right and everyone else is wrong. It sickens me!

Hey congrats on the interview - and you're so right in your last paragraph! (That obviously includes you and me! ;))

congratulations on the interview - you are probably right about the page views etc - altough as someone else said, this is also a function of individual differences - some are more affected by it than others.

first of all, congrats on the interview!
and second, yeah, groups are of a double edged sword, the problem with groups now is that ANYONE can make a group and be an admin for it, even people that don't have artistic talent or know what good art is, so we end with all these useless groups that don't do much or no control over what is submitted.
and lastly, yeah, you do have kind of point there with pageviews, favs and comments. even though we say we don't really care about we do, we still do like to see our work get lots of comments and favs because most people like getting feedback on their work no matter how small it is.

Firstly, great news about the interview!

As for groups, I do believe something needs to change IF DeviantArt wants to stay respectable in the art world, and in the realm of real artists (of all mediums). I have noticed some groups accept anything, no matter how terrible it is. That's not just the groups that automatically accept, but there are other groups that require votes for acceptance, and they still allow rubbish.

My inbox is always overflowing with group or DevWatch deviations, and I think I should follow your lead and do a clean out. However, your next point about getting your art seen, faved, etc is poignant and true. For unknown artists like myself I am considering staying a member of the groups but unsubscribe from the submission feed. Selfish? Rude? Perhaps. But when you look at some of the pics like (and this is not the worst by any means):

And it has 20 faves?! If I took a photo like that and put it in that group I would have one maybe two faves. And undeserved. 20 faves is nothing to some on dA, but for me it is heaps.
How can this :thumb297903580: be considered great photography? In eight groups, no less.

I care about the exposure - but I don't give a XXXX about the numbers. Better to reach a few people who tell their friends and spread the love, than a million people who just mouth platitudes, or regard you as a scrapbook that they can pilfer from.

Agree with you about Groups - there are some good ones, run by people who know their stuff, but the rest... hmm.
