All About ThumbsWhat are thumbs?
"Thumb" is short for "thumbnail" which is basically a miniature version of a deviation (merely a nickname used to describe a particular piece of art that has been submitted to deviantART1) and on deviantART, a thumb is clickable and leads to the original piece of art. Thumbs can be used in various places throughout deviantART such as features and forums.

Astrophotography- Some Of Your Questions AnsweredI have got to a point on this site that I am literally being inundated with questions about how I do some of my photos. I simply do not have time to answer them all in full individually anymore. It is seriously restricting the free time that I have to pursue this hobby and take those pictures that have become so popular (both on here and elsewhere). So for my well being and hopefully to the benefit of those who ask me so many questions, I am doing this write up.
Before I get into some questions though, I want to make a few things clear. I have spent a lot of time and money on trying to learn as much as I can to better myself with this style of photography. I love all forms of astrophotography and I really think I have found my niche. I hope to one day soon start making back a bit of that money I have spent. Punching the clockTook the Camaro to work today! It's driving so much more nicely these days. It was a good time, but there was no game out tonight to play with. I had one guy in a new Camaro giving me the evil eye but that was it.
The Camaro is one of those things that reminds me that there is something I did right. It makes me feel more special... plus chicks dig the car.
Doing my parade lap around the parking lot when I got there had everyone's attention. Everyone inside the building could hear the car and a lot of people came out just to see the car. A guy in a 66 Corvette Stingray convertible drove by and gave the thumbs up. Another customer came and talked it up with me a little bit.
Might do it again tomorrow. The clutch seems a little sketchy, though.

Displaying JournalsOn your page you can have the Featured Deviation Widgets where you can display your favourite Deviations from your Gallery.
Also you can use them to display your Journals. Here is how to do that:

#1 All you have to do is edit the Widget by clicking on the little Pencil icon

Normally you would get the following:

#2 Here you have to click on the Choose A Deviation button.

#3 In the Search field you should type in one of your Journal's title and your Features, Interviews or other.
Of course at first your deviations are showing up and you can select one, but if you type in anything elso to the field, everything related to it comes up.
Pick the one you would like to be displayed.

I found this First World War poster in the Library of Congress wartime-posters collection. As you can readily see, it was distributed in the U.K. In those days, of course, a nasty strong-arm campaign to do away with tobacco smoking—such as the one which swept employers and politicians off their feet in the U.S. and elsewhere during the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s—was unheard of.

Tutorial---Long exposures without a filter

I stumbled upon this tutorial yesterday and thought that some of you may be interested in this. I haven't tried this myself but it does look rather interesting. The only ND filters I own are two ND8's though I have wanted a ND400 for awhile now and probably will get one shortly. I am rather impressed with the end results of this tutorial and considering how much something like a Lee Big Stopper filter costs, it would seem that this is a viable alternative. In a way the workflow is similar to a HDR workflow involving several images but that is about where that comparison ends. I am VERY curious though and will have to try this out for myself in the days to come.

Speaking of long exposures and filters, I have another one for you all as well. Not so much a tutorial but rather a little chart which shows exposure times and shutter speed times when using a 10 stop filter (Lee Big Stopper or B&W 110) This makes things pretty easy instead of having to do the math in your head.

This is a life saver. As a low budget shooter, I have the same noise problems as the tutorial author; this technique completely solves that problem. I can't wait to go try this out!
