The Echo chamber dilemmaThe promise of the Internet was that unlimited information and experiences would draw us together. But instead it seems to have driven us apart.
For years I've observed this behavior but haven't been able to vocalize it correctly. Originally I called the behavior of collective opinions as "the hive mentality" of the Internet. But that wasn't exactly right and I often got called out on it. The most prominent example was when I made a comic about a guy disagreeing with opinions and being shouted at till he remained quiet, eventually fading into the background with everyone else. The consensus of that comic was that if you disagree with someone you aren't bullied into not speaking, but instead are free to go someplace else where people who do agree with you exist. And you know what? That wasn't what i was trying to convey, but is sadly true. The Internet is not a hive mind. It's many tiny pocket echo chambers of mutual agreements.

The best thing I have ever read as it relates to photography. Period. Bar none. [link] Think I am kidding? I'm not. It says it all completely. A little excerpt:

"Most mature and accomplished artists who embraced their own creativity no longer have much use for critique. From that point on, the critic is but a voice representing the tastes of others, who may or may not understand the work, and whose opinion is not likely to make an impact on the artist's direction. The exception, perhaps, is when the artist considers the critic a better artist than they are."

Photography quote of the day? (unrelated to the above but perhaps the other best thing i have ever read as it relates to photography) Sure why not, catch---

I am not interested to show my artwork to anyone actually. I photograph because I love it. And yes, if I like something is to show it to non-photographers: they know to find the beauty in it or to see what's more predominant: the beauty. Photographers on the other side they see the black spot on the WHITE sheet of paper. that 1% percent bad thing about your photo.

I love that quote so much, although I thought it was credited to Bruce Dickinson when I first noticed it...hehe! To be honest, I think critique and everything else is all just opinion. Technical information tends to be more fact and less feeling, but critique from anyone is really just what they think. I like hearing what people think but I'm also rarely devastated if someone doesn't like my photos. My customers like what I do for them, I like what I do for me and everything else is just a bonus
