Photo thoughts--- I am willing to wager you all weren't expecting this from me were you? Truth is I do all sorts of photography and have for a very long time, I just don't really post my "other" shots here on DA. So here I am, drinking coffee and just glancing at facebook this morning (I know, boo, hiss...) when I see this quote posted by someone. It sort of stops me in my tracks and catches my attention. It made me think and ponder for a second and it made me sit and reflect about things. I wondered about some people I know who want to sell their work yet never go out and photograph anything. I wonder how they rationalize that. How they don't get depressed like I do when I am not being creative and what it is that motivates them. It isn't hard to photograph things and if you want to get better there is only one way to do it and that is by doing the simple act of taking pictures!
About the photo--- I wanted an image that fit the quote and I thought this one was good for it. It is a shot of my neighbors child. I had her model for me in a spring rainstorm. There was something about those boots which really grabbed my attention...they stand out so much against the dreary atmosphere. I like that a lot. Using my Minolta 28mm f2.8 lens I went to town. I wanted something edgy and creative...something very different that people normally wouldn't expect from me. Did I succeed? You tell me ---John
Found this on FB first! Go figure!! It is a wonderful thoughtful quote and those boots are really amazing against the darker rainy day~~ Keep surprising us!!!
I love the photo and the quote. It's true for any art form. You can study, you can look at other people's work, but to really learn an art, you must do it, and do it, and do it some more.
Many a times it is the unexpected which makes the shot. To answer your question, yes you did succeed.
I do absolutely agree with the quote. However, there is certainly a time and place for tuition, whether that be in the form of critiques, books, tutorials or learning from other artists. I love reading the comments of great photographs and mediocre photos from great photographers, for the purpose of learning what makes it great or not so great. Particularly helpful for relative beginners like me who are still struggling with basics like getting good composition.
Ok, firstly, I love this shot! You most definitely succeeded. Secondly great find on the quote... if there's one thing Facebook is good for, it's finding quotes.
