A Coyote pauses during the hunt of an Elk in Rocky Mountain National park, Colorado.

I have never witnessed a lone Coyote go after a full grown Elk before until I photographed this scene. Apparently this Coyote thought it was a Wolf and could take down a full grown cow all by itself. We watched this scene for a long time as the Coyote just would not give up, chasing the Elk through the river and in through the forested areas of Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park, stopping only to rest for a minute or two until going at it again. The Elk seemed quite confused by the whole ordeal and had obvious bite marks on her lower hind legs. I wondered where the rest of the Coyote pack of Moraine Park was at as this was certainly their valley and theirs alone. No where to be found though. I managed to captured this shot of her while she took a breather and a moments pause to re-gather her stamina. Soaking wet from chasing the Elk in the river, she looked at us for a few moments before continuing onwards in her hunt, which I imagine was pretty unsuccessful. None the less, an amazing scene which I was able to witness and photograph.---John
