That folks is one angry Grackle lol I had fun shooting him though, and am pretty happy with how the detail in the bird came out in this shot. Shot using my Tamron 200-400mm lens and converted in B&W using Pog's Mono Renditionizer. It kind of reminds me of something right out of a Hitchcock novel.
This isn't the kind of thing that we usually see from you, John. That's a good thing - not only because it's great to see something different, but because it's a really effective shot. Whilst the image itself is quite bright, there's definitely a slightly ominous mood surrounding it.
I particularly like the way that the image is arranged around only three objects, which feel like they're floating free from the rest of the world - almost in a studio-like setting. The out-of-focus branch contrasts nicely with the machined edges of the sign and the sharpness of the grackle's beak and feather-tips. The way that the overlap one another ties each object together, which I think is very effective.
The only minor nit-pick I have with this shot is that to my taste there could be just a little more white space on the right-hand-side; the grackle's tail feels a bit hemmed in. And its eye could perhaps be a touch sharper, but that's hardly a deal-breaker.
Overall I think this is a really interesting direction from you, John. I'd like to see more like this because it's so well-executed!
That's one healthy looking bird. I am so impressed by how clear your photos are of these wild animals. You must speak their language in a calm sense. I'm really impressed.
