Ready To Take Flightby `kkart

Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica) just about to take off. My favorite all time bird and my first shot of one as well, they are hard to photograph, fast as heck and never sit still. I am very biased & partial to these little guys, and there is a reason for it, too. I actually had 2 of them as pets when I was growing up as a kid. They fell out of the nest as babies and the [parents took flight. Myself and my family hand raised them...one died after just a few weeks, but the other, went on. We named him "Barney The Barn Swallow". I was young, maybe 8...and we took him for weekly checkups at the local vet, fed him raw hamburger and worms...and one day it was time to go. It was very hard for me, but he always came back...He would often land right next to me at the picknick table I sat at, and relaxed. He did this for several years...You know, I miss Barney.

I love swallows as well. Actually, they are my favourite bird. What a lovely story to go with a lovely picture! The detail and the colours in this is just amazing. I've never noticed before the blue sheen they have, but then, like you say they are very fast and difficult to catch sitting still! Impressive photo
