Description

It's been a tough year thus far for me photographically speaking. Major surgery in January left me in the hospital for nearly 3 1/2 weeks and while there healing up and going through physical therapy, all I could think about was how bad I wanted to get back out with my camera. I was chomping at the bit as I watched some amazing sunrises and sunrises happen from my hospital room window. Needless to say since then I have been photographing my heart out as much as possible. It is sort of bitter sweet however in a sense as I am not fully cleared yet medically and as a result, I have had to stay close to home and only photograph locations which are nearby. Every day it makes me crazy to look to the west and see the mountains and knowing that right now I want to be there so bad but can't. It's also been a driving factor as far as motivation goes to heal up quickly. Perhaps though one of the best things about it all is that it has forced me to get VERY creative which has lead to growth for me as a photographer. I am beginning to notice the beauty which I hadn't noticed before and how my eyes have really been opened up to it. Case in point, this image....

Nobody would probably guess that this was photographed in Denver at Sloan's Lake. It's certainly not a view that represents the location by any means. I was watching the light cast its golden glow against the peaks of the Rockies when I had a lightbulb go off which basically said "why don't you grab your 500, get in close and see what you can get". I love doing telephoto landscapes using a long lens, it allows you to see a lot of things which the naked eye doesn't. I guess I never did it from here before because I always figured it wouldn't work; too much haze, loss of contrast, etc. After all this is seriously far away from my location, roughly 55 miles to the summit of Mt Evans (which is out of the photo but just to the right of these peaks) In the end, I got the shot I wanted and I walked away with a rather large smile on my face knowing I just bagged my first true mountain shot of 2014, the very thing I have been longing for.
