Lightchasing on Guanella Pass

Guanella Pass, Colorado

You combine late evening light during Golden Hour, the lower Alpine, and The Rocky Mountains, throw in a mix of thunderstorm clouds, and you get one heck of a killer dramatic scene! And so this was!

The weather really played a helping hand in this shot, and the light, well, it just simply couldn't get any better than this!

Hope you all like it
--John

PS-A few said the foreground seemed to sharp so went back in and adjusted that

I think this one is my personal favorite.

There's something about the mountains out west that just takes my breath away. being near them or flying over them in person is like touching infinity.

The clouds and the way the land stretches out is just breathtaking.

While browsing through the most popular nature gallery photographs in the last three months. I came across this image. I just want to clarify a few things. You describe this as, " late evening light during Golden Hour." Now I'm assuming you use the definition of the golden hour that all other nature photographers use - - the very first, and very last hours of sunlight during the day. Your EXIF data on this image clearly states that this was shot at 4:14 PM on July 24, 2009. In Denver Colorado, the sun set on July 24, 2009 at 8:21 PM - - 4 hours and 7 minutes after this photo was taken. Since that is indeed the case, this image was shot more than three hours before the golden hour. At least in my experience, 4:14 PM in August is not considered "late evening," and it certainly isn't considered the golden hour. Now I first thought that maybe the clock in your camera was off. I checked a few other shots before, and after this shot was taken, and according to your descriptions on those shots, the clock on your 5D appears to be set just fine.

Secondly, the foreground in this shot is most definitely oversharpened. Although it's quite evident even without a close inspection, a closer look at the full view shows the rocks in the foreground as well as the mountains in the background to have unnatural triangular jagged edges, a clear tell of too much sharpening.

Composure wise you have a nice shot here. If you go back to this spot In better light and with a much tamer post processing strategy, this will be a very nice shot.
